Bay Area Day Trip: An awesome afternoon in Daly City, beaches and all

Got an itch to go explore new places, but only an afternoon’s
worth of time? Our new Bay Area Daytripper series explores the fun
to be had in our own backyard, including some unexpectedly great
places to hike, grab a bite or indulge in a sip or two — starting
in Daly City.

Daly City may be known as the gateway to
Silicon Valley, but it’s way more than that. The largest city in
San Mateo County also boasts pristine coastal parks, great dim sum
and a new brewery and taproom. Here’s how to spend a wonderful
afternoon there and still make it home before dark.

With an afternoon hike ahead, you’ll want to fuel up
beforehand. Head for Beit Rima, the San Francisco
Arabic comfort food spot that recently opened its third location on
the Peninsula in Westlake Center. Chef-owner Samir Mogannam crafts
homey classics like beef kabob alongside modern dishes, like whole
fried branzino dredged in spiced semolina. But we’re going for
the Mezze Sampler ($18), which gets you four dips, including
muhammara and hummus, with pickles, falafel and olives. Don’t
miss fresh-baked bread ($5), topped with zaa’tar and sumac, for

Walk it off at Thornton State Beach, where John
Daly Boulevard meets Skyline Boulevard. There, you can park for
free and take in the stunning views of coastline and crashing
waves. Erosion has partially eaten away at the cliffs and the State
Park system has closed beach access here. So be careful and make
sure you stick to the lush, vein-like paths at Thornton Beach Vista
— which is run by the city — or walk north towards Mar Vista
Stables, where hikers and horseback riders descend ¾ of a mile to
the sand. If those last several yards seem steep, stop midway, park
yourself on a rock and just enjoy the view.Related Articles

And afterward…

Grab a beer at Gilman Brewing Co., where
you’ll find up to 24 suds on tap ($3.50-$7.50), including a
lineup of stellar saisons, Belgians and a dessert-like Blackberry
Milkshake Hazy IPA. Want real dessert? In addition to a full menu
of starters, sandwiches and wood-fired pizzas, the Berkeley-based
craft brewery offers a killer chocolate-stout brownie and a gelato
di buffalo with fennel cookies.
